What Determines the Lifespan of an In-Pool Lounge Chair?
The following factors usually have a greater effect on longevity than the pool type alone.
Material and Construction
Material is the starting point for estimating how well a chair may handle repeated pool use.
Standard patio furniture may resist an occasional rain shower without being designed for partial submersion. In-pool furniture should instead use materials and construction methods suitable for moisture, direct sunlight, cleaning, and repeated placement on a shallow pool ledge.

However, terms such as “weather-resistant” or “UV-stable” should not be interpreted as “incapable of fading” or “guaranteed never to age.” All outdoor furniture can show normal changes after repeated exposure to sunlight, heat, water, and use.

Pool Water Chemistry
A properly maintained chlorine pool does not automatically cause an in-pool chair to deteriorate quickly. The greater concern is repeated exposure to unusually concentrated chemicals or water that remains outside its recommended balance.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends maintaining an appropriate disinfectant level and keeping residential pool pH between 7.0 and 7.8.[1] Balanced water allows the sanitizer to work effectively and helps reduce conditions that may contribute to scaling, corrosion, or equipment deterioration.
Furniture-related risks may increase when:
- Chlorine remains unusually high for extended periods
- The pH stays too high or too low
- Undissolved chemicals contact the chair directly
- A chair remains in the pool during heavy shock treatment
- Chemicals are added without enough circulation time
- Water is rarely tested or adjusted
Routine, balanced chlorination does not always require the same removal process as heavy chemical treatment. Before shocking the pool or making a major chemical adjustment, however, removing the furniture is the more conservative approach.
Sunlight and Outdoor Exposure
Pool water is not the only source of material aging.
Outdoor furniture is also exposed to ultraviolet radiation, surface heat, air, moisture, and temperature changes. UV radiation and elevated temperatures can contribute to the gradual degradation of outdoor polymers, although the rate depends on the material, stabilizers, color, construction, and exposure conditions.[2]
A UV-stable material is designed to perform better outdoors, but extended exposure can still contribute to gradual color change and surface aging. Covering or storing the chair during long periods of non-use can reduce unnecessary year-round exposure.
Cleaning and Handling
Incorrect cleaning can shorten the useful life of pool furniture even when the material itself is suitable for the environment.
Avoid using:
- Abrasive scrubbing pads
- Strong solvents
- Undiluted bleach directly on the furniture
- Concentrated pool chemicals as cleaners
- Pressure washers
- Sharp scraping tools
Instead, rinse the chair with clean water and use a soft cloth with mild soap when necessary. This is particularly important when removing sunscreen, tanning oil, salt residue, algae, or mineral deposits.
Movement also matters. Lifting the chair is better than dragging it across a rough pool deck or ledge. Dragging can create scratches on the furniture and may trap grit beneath the chair, increasing the risk of abrasion.
